If it's varied and rugged landscapes with mountain views you're looking for, you'll be spoilt for choice on the Heaphy Track. Tackle the track in 4-5 days, or take your time and soak in the views over 6-days starting from either the Nelson or Westport end.

Highlights

  • Kahurangi National Park is home to an abundance of native birds. Weka, tūī, kererū, kea and kākā can be found along the way
  • Fantastic flora! See huge podocarps and giant northern rātā in the lowland forest, a huge variety of alpine and sub alpine species on the Gouland Downs and karaka, ngaio and nīkau palms in the coastal forest
  • Get on your bike! From 1 May to 30 September every year, you can mountain bike the Heaphy Track and takes 2-3 days to ride. Riding from Aorere to Karamea is the most popular
