Excess Baggage

Excess baggage charges apply when a traveller's checked-in baggage exceeds the free allowance either by weight or by the number of pieces permitted.

See our excess baggage charges by selecting your departure destination from the drop down menu above.

For flights within New Zealand, excess baggage is charged per extra piece over the permitted allowance.

Flights between New Zealand, Australia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Norfolk Island, Samoa, Tonga and Noumea, excess baggage is charged per kilogram over the permitted allowance.

For international journeys, excess baggage rates vary depending on the destination. You may also wish to contact our Air New Zealand Reservations or your local Air New Zealand Holidays Store / Travelcentre for additional information regarding these rates.

If you are travelling with excess baggage, please remember to allow sufficient time to complete the necessary formalities at check-in and also remember your excess baggage will be carried subject to space availability on your flight.

As an alternative to paying excess baggage charges you may wish to consider sending any clothes or personal items as unaccompanied baggage.
